Leo Chu

Global Ambassador Award
President of California Casino Management

Leo Chu, President of California Casino Management, will receive our inaugural Global Ambassador Award for his leadership in building bridges and extending USC’s global reach in the Pacific Rim. Mr. Chu founded one of Los Angeles’ largest private clothing companies — California Ivy. In 1996, after selling his clothing company, Mr. Chu ventured into the gaming business, becoming the owner of Hollywood Park Casino and Crystal Park Casino Hotel in Los Angeles. He also purchased 50 percent of Lucky Derby Casino near Sacramento, Calif. In addition, Mr. Chu has shared his leadership and industry knowledge by serving on the California Gambling Advisory Board, the Golden State Gaming Association, Southern California Casino Association, and the California Gambling Control Commission.

Leonard Schaeffer

Founding Chairman and CEO of WellPoint

Leonard Schaeffer will receive our inaugural Sol Price Award for his exceptional business achievements with Wellpoint and Blue Cross of California as well has his deep commitment to philanthropic support for healthcare. Mr. Schaeffer is the founding Chairman and CEO of WellPoint, the nation’s largest health benefits company by membership. WellPoint serves over 34 million medical members and has annualized revenues of $60.7 billion. He is currently the Judge Robert Maclay Widney Chair and Professor at USC and is a Senior Advisor to TPG Capital, a private equity firm. Mr. Schaeffer also has extensive experience in public service, having previously been Administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration, where he was responsible for the U.S. Medicare and Medicaid programs, as well as the Assistant Secretary for Management and Budget of the federal Department of Health and Human Services.

Aaron Sorkin

Aaron Sorkin
Vision and Leadership Award
Screenwriter and Producer

Aaron Sorkin, renowned screenwriter and producer, will receive our Vision and Leadership Award for the influence his work and career has had in inspiring generations of young Americans to engage in political discourse and activism. Mr. Sorkin won the Academy Award, the Golden Globe and the Critics Choice Award for his screenplay, The Social Network. The film received critical praise appearing in over 350 top ten critics lists around the country. He recently won the Critics’ Choice Award and was nominated for an Academy Award for the adapted screenplay, Moneyball. Sorkin’s HBO hit series, The Newsroom, debuted earlier in the year bringing in an average of 7 million viewers per episode. He also spent four years writing and producing The West Wing, for which he received numerous accolades including two Peabody Awards and the Humanitas Prize.
