The Washington Post featured research by USC Price School of Public Policy Professor Antonio Bento and colleagues that showed reduced average vehicle weights due to fuel efficiency standards may have resulted in fewer fatalities during traffic collisions. “What the paper shows is that even if those environmental benefits are very, very low, if nothing else, from a safety reason, you have a reason to move forward with the standards,” Bento said. The working paper was published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, the story noted.
