MPL alum Phillips writes LA Times op-ed on root cause of city’s affordable housing crisis

The Los Angeles Times published an op-ed by USC Price MPL alumnus and urban planner Shane Phillips on the root cause of Los Angeles’ affordable housing crisis. Phillips wrote: “So next time someone suggests that a fancy new development is driving up rents in a neighborhood, remember Venice, and Rosemead and Reseda. These communities aren’t growing, and yet rents there are surging just like downtown and Hollywood. The problem is not overly complex or nefarious. It’s a simple shortage — the result of 30 years of operating under the false premise that ‘if you don’t build it, they won’t come.’”
