SPPD Updates in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles

Stephen Hora

SPPD Research Professor Stephen Hora and Isaac Maya of the USC Homeland Security Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE), discussed the center’s research with officials at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on July 21. Hora also met with staff in the office of Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA).

Dowell Myers

Professor Dowell Myers presented demographic data at the 2010 Crossroads Symposium – a policy summit in June on youth education and employment, co-sponsored by the City of Los Angeles’ Workforce Investment Board and the Community Development Department. The Symposium builds on the “One Out of Five” report, which showed that 20 percent of Los Angeles youth are disconnected from education and employment Myers’ data provided context on the effects of the recession on this population, and how the ongoing dropout crisis creates “pathways to poverty.”
