Readmission

20927672236_067f1ebda6_nStudents who do not attempt coursework for at least one semester (during the fall or spring semester) of an academic year without having submitted a Leave of Absence form will be required to reactivate their files. For graduate students, this process requires submitting an Application for Readmission (readmission is not guaranteed). For undergraduate students, this requires completion of a Degree Activation Form.  If readmitted, the student will be subject to all of the current requirements for the degree in effect in the current USC Catalogue at the time of readmission. Detailed information follows.

Graduate Students

A student who leaves the university without obtaining a formal leave of absence from graduate study is not automatically readmitted.

Process for Readmission Less than 10/7 Years
The following process goes into effect if less than ten years (for doctoral students) or seven years (for master’s students) have passed since the student started his/her program:

  • Student must file a USC Price Master’s Petition (PDF) (for master’s students), or a USC Price Doctoral Petition (PDF) (for DPDS and DPA students) with the appropriate Student Services Advisor. Ph.D. students must submit The Graduate School Application for Readmission. Ph.D. students must include a statement on why their enrollment lapsed, a timeline for completion of the degree, and a current resume.
  • The Student Services Advisor forwards the request to the degree director for approval.
  • The Graduate School Application for Readmission for Ph.D. is forwarded to the Graduate School for approval.
  • The Student Services Advisor informs the student of the decision.
  • If readmission is granted in close proximity to the time limit for completing the degree, the student should simultaneously submit a request for extension of time.

Process for Readmission More than 10/7 Years
The following process goes into effect if more than 10 years (for doctoral students) and seven years (for master’s students) have transpired since the student started the program:

  • Students formally reapply through the Office of Admission and resubmit the Graduate Application for Admission, transcripts, test scores, statement, and letters of recommendation. Students should submit all application materials to the USC Price Office of Recruitment and Admission (RGL 111).

Process to Use Earlier Catalogue for Readmitted Students
To request that the USC Catalogue in effect at the time of the original admission be used to satisfy degree requirements:

  • Students submit a USC Price Master’s Petition (PDF) (for master’s students) or a USC Price Doctoral Petition (PDF) (for doctoral students) to the appropriate Student Services Advisor and indicate why they believe they should be allowed to graduate with the USC Catalogue requirements in effect at the time they first enrolled.
  • The Student Services Advisor forwards the request to the degree director for approval.
  • The Student Services Advisor notifies the student in writing the outcome of the decision.

For additional information, please go to the Graduate Students page in the Requirements for Graduation section of the USC Catalogue.

Undergraduate Students

Students who have failed to attempt coursework for at least one semester within an academic year without filing a Leave of Absence Form will have their Program of Study (degree objective) expired. Returning undergraduates will be required to meet with their department advisor and complete a Degree Activation Form before registration will be permitted.
