What is GVSP?

The Global Visiting Scholars Platform (GVSP), managed by the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) at the USC Price School of Public Policy, provides a “home away from home” at the USC Price School of Public Policy for visiting scholars from around the world. Such visits are typically for six months or more, corresponding to a sabbatical leave or as part of a prescribed dissertation or post-doctoral activity from the visiting scholar’s home institution. During this time, drawing upon USC library and other resource materials, the visiting scholar will devote time principally to independent pursuit of his/her own research agenda. To support this effort, OGE organizes regular workshops for participants and other activities, including personalized feedback and guidance pertaining to their research. Visiting scholars will also have access to a wide range of public seminars and other offerings available throughout the University.

What are the benefits?

As the name suggests, the Global Visiting Scholars Platform provides a sturdy foundation for scholarly inquiry, in-depth writing and research productivity. This is fostered in large measure through the community of scholars who gather and convene on the GVS platform. While each scholar bears ultimate responsibility for advancing his/her own research, the mutual support and interest of one’s peers is an important stimulant and motivation, as well as being a vital source of constructive feedback. Visiting scholars will have ample opportunity to refine their ideas and articulate their reasoning while also making use of USC’s libraries and other scholarly resources. Each GVSP scholar will receive a certificate of participation upon completion of the program of prescribed activities during their visiting period.

Who is eligible?

The Global Visiting Scholars Platform is geared primarily to junior faculty (Assistant or Associate Professors or Postdoctoral scholars) who are readying themselves for promotion to the next tier and advanced Ph.D. students who are completing their dissertation research. More senior faculty who seek to refresh their research agendas and enhance professional and institutional partnerships with the Price School may also join. A letter from a responsible administrator at the Visiting Scholar’s home institution should accompany the application form.

How much does it cost?

The GVSP fee is US$3000 for up to half a year or US $5,000 for up to a full year. Each Visiting Scholar is responsible for arranging all other expenses such as travel, food, health insurance and lodging. For scholars who wish to participate in the program for more than one year, please contact the Office of Global Engagement directly.

How to apply?
