Graduates, students, staff and faculty gathered recently to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Master of Nonprofit Leadership and Management program (MNLM) at the USC Price School of Public Policy.

One of the few programs of its kind in the nation, MNLM offers mid-career professionals an opportunity to build leadership and decision-making skills, with an emphasis on strengthening organizations, changing systems, and making a difference in communities. More than 160 students have earned an MNLM, with another cohort set to do so in May 2025.

For example, one of the MNLM alumna who attended the celebration, Ifunanya Nweke, leads an organization called Jazz Hands For Autism, which teaches people with autism how to play music and even develop careers in the industry.

Another group of alumni are leading a national effort to prevent suicide. Still another is working to protect healthcare for women at Planned Parenthood.

Meanwhile, current MNLM students are studying how funds provided by a foundation established by the band Metallica are helping adults get training in the trades. The project, known as a capstone, is led by Associate Professor Nicole Esparza and gives students an opportunity to work on real-life challenges.

“Our students are looking at how those funds helped students across the country as they help the foundation figure out best return on investment,” said MNLM Director Regina Birdsell. “Interestingly, the band members put up their own money and then ask fans to contribute as well. They admit if they weren’t lucky enough to land careers in music they would have been working with their hands.”
