Sherwin Memel is a senior partner of the Health Law department at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips. Mr. Memel is recognized as one of the founders of and a leader in the field of health law in the United States. His practice focuses on integrated delivery organizations, hospital-physician transactions, healthcare financing, IPAs, HMOs and PPOs, healthcare joint ventures, government relations, reimbursement and financially troubled healthcare organizations, as well as hospital governance and board member responsibilities. He also advises health and workers’ compensation insurance companies, governmental entities, biotechnology research organizations, universities, university faculties and other physician groups, individual physicians, trade associations, medical products and health-related services companies.
Mr. Memel’s expansive memberships include the California State Bar Association; Los Angeles County, Century City and American Bar Associations; District of Columbia Bar Association; National Health Lawyers Association; American Society of Law and Medicine; and American Academy of Healthcare Attorneys. He is a member and former president of the California Society for Healthcare Attorneys. He is a member and on the board of directors for Pacific Public Radio, a former member of the Federal Health Insurance Benefits Advisory Council, and former member and president of the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance. As chair of the USC Price School Health Advisory Board, Mr. Memel also serves as a member of the USC Price Board of Councilors.
Mr. Memel is the former legal columnist of Healthcare Executive. He is co-author of Real Estate Issues in the Health Care Industry (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1996) with Ronald S. Barak. He is a distinguished speaker for ACHE, the American Hospital Association, the California Association of Health Facilities, HFMA, the Governance Institute, the Rand Healthcare Alliance, the Arkansas State Hospital Association, the New York State Hospital Association, the American Academy of Healthcare Attorneys, the National Health Lawyers Association and the CA Society for Healthcare Attorneys.
Among Mr. Memel’s honors are the American Hospital Association’s Award of Honor, and the Award of Honor from the Federation of American Hospitals. He has been listed in The National Registry of Who’s Who; Who’s Who in American Law, in California, and in the West; National Law Journal’s Who’s Who in Healthcare Law, Who’s Who Registry of Global Business Leaders, The Best Lawyer’s in America, Faulkner & Gray’s Health Care 500, International Who’s Who of Professionals, Strathmore’s Who’s Who, California Medicine, and Healthcare Who’s Who. He received his bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctorate from UCLA. He has taught health law at UCLA in both the Graduate School of Business Administration and in the School of Public Health, and serves on the adjunct faculty and teaches the legal course at for the USC MHA program.
