USC Price School of Public Policy Professor Gary Painter was recently elected president of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association (AREUEA).
Founded in 1964, AREUEA is a nonprofit association that advances knowledge and research in real estate development, planning and economics, and facilitates the exchange of information among practitioners in academia, government and the professional arena who are concerned with these fields.
“This honor reflects Gary’s leadership role in the field of real estate and urban economics, and his commitment to influencing real-world policy,” noted Dean Jack H. Knott.
Painter was elected by the association’s members and will serve in this leadership role for one year.
As president, Painter will oversee the management team responsible for the association’s numerous activities. He will also present a presidential address at various conferences, as well as chair AREUEA board meetings.
Painter, who serves as director of graduate programs in public policy at USC Price and director of research at the Lusk Center for Real Estate, said he hopes to continue to grow the size and reputation of AREUEA through several ways.
He plans to make all of AREUEA’s conferences into “showcase events,” expanding the scope of the upcoming national conference while still maintaining its policy focus.
“This year our international conference will be in Jerusalem,” Painter said. “We also have an annual conference held in conjunction with the ASSA [Allied Social Science Associations] and AEA [American Economic Association] in January, in addition to our national conference at the end of May.”
Painter also noted how he is committed to furthering the reputation of the association’s flagship journal, Real Estate Economics, which has seen a strong rise in rankings in recent years.
“Finally,” he added, “we hope to increase our partnerships with sister organizations like the Urban Economics Association and the American Finance Association, which conduct research that is central to the focus of AREUEA.”
