LT Andrew Bates was born in Flensburg, Germany. He graduated cum laude from Boston University in 2015 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and earned his commission through the NROTC Old Ironsides Battalion.
Following 15 months of nuclear training at Naval Nuclear Power School in Charleston, SC and S8G Prototype in Ballston Spa, NY, LT Bates reported to the USS TENNESSEE (SSBN 734)(GOLD) for his first sea duty. While onboard TENNESSEE, he served as the Assistant Weapons Officer and Main Propulsion Assistant. He completed four strategic deterrent patrols, standing watch as Officer of the Deck and Engineering Officer of the Watch.
In December 2019, LT Bates reported to the USS SAN FRANCISCO (SSN 711) as a conversion engineer. He served as the Electrical Assistant and Training Improvements Officer during his time onboard, overseeing operations as the ship underwent its conversion from a submarine to a moored training ship.
LT Bates assumed his current position at NROTC Los Angeles Consortium at the University of Southern California in June 2021. Fight On!
His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and selection as Submarine Squadron 20’s Junior Officer of the Year for 2019.
