Graduate Students

Graduate students may repeat a course in which a grade of “C-” or below was received, however both grades will be calculated into the grade point average. Graduate students who wish to repeat a course in which a grade of C+ or C was received and also include the subsequent grade in the grade point average must petition the Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures (CAPP) prior to re-registering in the course. Post hoc approval will not be granted.

In no case will additional degree credit be given for repeated courses or duplicated work. No student may repeat a course in which a grade of B- or better was received.

Repeating Courses/Conditions of Admission
Graduate students who are admitted with conditions and who do not earn the requisite grade in a specific degree requirement may be asked to leave the program or take an additional class. Students will not be asked to retake a course unless they have earned a C- or below.

Undergraduate Students

Students who enter as freshmen may repeat a maximum of three courses taken during the first two semesters of enrollment at USC in which grades of D+ or below (including UW and IX) were received. Only the subsequent grade, even if lower, will be calculated into the grade point average. The same course may be repeated no more than once for the benefit of substitution of grade. Undergraduates must notify the Degree Progress Department before applying this policy to repeated coursework.

Undergraduates may repeat other courses in which grades of D+ or below were received, but in these instances both grades will be calculated in the GPA. Students who have been assigned a grade as a result of a Student Conduct Sanction may not repeat the course.

Undergraduates who wish to repeat a course in which a grade of C+, C or C- was received and also have the subsequent grade calculated into the grade point average must petition the committee on Academic Policies and Procedures (CAPP) for permission prior to re-registering in the course. Post hoc approval will not be granted.

For additional information, go to the Academic Standards page in the USC Catalogue and look under repeated course work.
