Biography

Dr. Norris Gunby, Jr. is an Associate Professor (Teaching) of Health Services Administration.  He has a long academic and consulting career having served as a consultant of general management and healthcare strategic management. He has 10+ years’ experience working with SMEs (CAHs, SNFs, group practices and solo practitioners).  Dr. Gunby earned a Bachelor’s in Sociology at Paine College, a Master of Healthcare Administration from Tulane University and a PhD in Health Services Administration from the University of Alabama-Birmingham.  He has taught general and healthcare management at several academic institutions including UNC-Chapel Hill & Wake Forest.  His research is focused in several areas including strategic and operational management in the long-term care continuum and racial microaggressions in the healthcare workforce.  He is the founder of the Strategy Research Group with colleagues from five universities where they focus on operational and strategic management in the long-term care continuum.  He has testified and lobbied before state legislatures on behalf of rural municipalities attempting to preserve their healthcare options.  He has current and past memberships in:  AOM (Healthcare division), NAHSE, SREB Doctoral Scholars, AUPHA, ACHCA and the PhD Project, among many others.

A native Georgian, he is a huge Atlanta Falcons fan and growing up near Augusta, loves the Masters, tennis and watching science programs and documentaries with his teenage son.  He and his wife, Dr. Jessica Decuir-Gunby, Department Head and Professor of Educational Psychology at NC State University, as all good academic couples, met at a research conference. The live in West Hills, CA and have a son, Norris III.  This trio is normally a quintet with two feline family members and are currently seeking to adopt more furry family members.
