What is the purpose of NROTC?

“The Navy ROTC Program was established to develop midshipmen mentally, morally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, and loyalty, and with the core values of honor, courage and commitment in order to commission college graduates as naval officers who possess a basic professional background, are motivated toward careers in the naval service, and have a potential for future development in mind and character so as to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.”

What financial benefits do I get as a scholarship MIDN?

The NROTC scholarship covers full tuition and required fees (health center, student programming, lab, and orientation fees). All other charges (e.g.. housing costs) must be settled with the Student Financial Services office.

Scholarship midshipmen also receive a monthly stipend that increases with each year in the program.

Midshipmen also receive a $375 stipend for books each semester and a $2,000 housing stipend each semester provided by the university.

Do I have any commitments during the summer?

Yes. Midshipmen who are either on scholarship or Advanced Standing, are not on LOA, and are in good physical condition (see Regulation for Officer Development, Section 3-20) have the privilege of attending cruises each summer between their freshmen and senior years. 

According to U.S.C. 10 (Title 10), a first class cruise is required for commissioning.

What is the minimum service obligation post-commissioning?

Marine Option midshipmen have a four-year active duty obligation after commissioning.

Navy Option scholarship midshipmen have a five-year active duty obligation and a three year Inactive Ready Reserve commitment post commissioning.

Advanced Standing midshipmen have a three year active duty commitment.

Can I be guaranteed a pilot slot?

In the Navy, no. Marine Option midshipmen may apply for guaranteed assignment to an aviation MOS after they have completed one year in the NROTC Program (ROD, Section 4-47).

What jobs can I have in the Navy?

Midshipmen are usually given Unrestricted Line (URL) designators. They are:

  • Naval Aviator
  • Naval Flight Officer
  • Submarine Warfare Officer
  • Surface Warfare Officer
  • Surface Nuclear Warfare Officer
  • Explosive Ordinance Disposal Officer
  • Special Warfare Officer

In special situations, a handful of midshipmen are granted Restricted Line (RL) designators such as Naval Reactors engineer.
