MPA Specializations and Recommended Courses
MPA students are encouraged to specialize by completing 16 units of focused electives in a substantive subject area. Six popular specialization tracks and recommended courses are listed below. Students may take other relevant electives, however, to complete their degree with a specialization.
Alternatively, students who prefer to pursue a specialization of personal interest may self-design (with Price School guidance) a program that includes USC courses across various disciplines. Or, students may consider pursuing a certificate program; interested students should discuss certificate options with their advisor.

Process:
Step 1: Talk to your MPA advisor on whether this is something you are interested in pursuing for your MPA degree. We encourage you to meet with us as early as possible in your program.
Step 2: You must apply through the Thornton program.
To do so, please submit the following components via e-mail directly to the Arts Leadership program director, Kenneth Foster
([email protected]):
- The Arts Leadership course of study recognizes that we are living in a world in which multiple external events – developing technology, mass migrations of people, the climate crisis and more are rapidly changing the world in which artists and arts organizations must function, now and in the future. Explain which trend you think is most dramatically changing our world and specifically what impact it is having or will have on the arts field.
- Describe a situation in which you believe you demonstrated real leadership and that illuminates your ability to work with others to achieve a shared outcome.
- One of the core elements of the ARTL degree is the Practicum Project; a “real world” organization, project, idea or venture of your own choosing, that will serve as the focal point of your work throughout your time in the program. Give a brief description of what that would be for you, should you be admitted to the program.
Upon review of your application, the Arts Leadership Director will contact you to schedule an interview. Faculty will coordinate online interview dates and times with applicants directly.
If admitted, students must follow all Thornton school requirements.
Step 3: If approved by Arts Leadership, the final plan will be reviewed and completed with the MPA advisor. The student and advisor will sign the program form that outlines the specific requirements.
