Biography

Captain George Bernal is a 29-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) and currently serves as Captain of the Twin Towers Correctional Facility (TTCF).  He began his career with the LASD in 1996 as a jail deputy at the Men’s Central Jail. Captain Bernal worked patrol for approximately seven years before promoting to station detectives, and eventually becoming a gang investigator, assigned to the LASD’s Operation Safe Streets (OSS).  

In 2014, Captain Bernal was promoted to the rank of sergeant and returned to the Custody Division as a supervisor at the Men’s Central Jail.  He would later be assigned to the Jail Investigative Unit, where he supervised jail gang investigators and led numerous complex investigations. In 2019, he was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the TTCF, where he held a variety of positions, including Watch Commander, Compliance Lieutenant, and Operations Lieutenant.  

In 2022, he transferred to patrol before being promoted to the rank of Captain and returning to the Custody Division.  Since then, he has commanded the Access to Care Bureau, the Custody Compliance Services Bureau, and his current unit of assignment, TTCF.  

Captain Bernal earned his bachelor’s degree from the California State University, Fullerton, and his master’s degree from the California State University, Long Beach.  He is committed to lifelong learning and continuously seeks opportunities for professional and personal growth.
