Community Storytelling for Social Change
In times of turmoil, storytelling can be a catalyst for policy change, as well as a symbol for healing and resistance. On the 30th anniversary of the Los Angeles Uprising, SCI and its partners presented a panel discussion, “Community Storytelling for Policy Change – The Lasting Influence of Latasha Harlins, Rodney King, and the 1992 LA Uprising.” Watch the video.
Training Beyond the Department
SCI and The Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (AIPG) host a webinar to discuss how law enforcement programs outside of the department are vital. The discussion addresses some unique aspects that typically aren’t incorporated in police training, including civil and human rights protection education, the social psychology of perpetrators of identity-based violence, the specific realities of policing in traumatized communities, and working with civilian oversight mechanisms. Rancho Mirage Writers Festival: Post-9/11 Homegrown Violent Extremism
PSI Director Dr. Erroll Southers spoke at the 2019 Rancho Mirage Writers Festival, hosted by PSI donors Jamie Kabler and Helene Galen, who is a member of the USC Board of Trustees. Dr. Southers shared information on how violent extremists exploit vulnerabilities in their communities and offered approaches to put security theory into practice.
