Biography
Dr. Boeing is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Spatial Analysis, the Director of USC’s Urban Data Lab, and a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution.
His research explores the spatial outcomes of urban planning through network analysis, geospatial data science, machine learning, and AI. It has won several awards, including the Nobel Sustainability Award, the Stough-Johansson Springer Award, and the Zephyr Foundation’s Technical Achievement Award. His work is regularly featured in the media—including The Economist, The Guardian, The Atlantic, and The Washington Post—and he has presented it at the Venice Biennale of Architecture and in keynote talks around the world.
He has served on the editorial boards of several journals, including Urban Studies, Annals of the AAG, and Cities, and has published his research in journals across scientific and policy disciplines, including The Lancet Global Health, the Journal of the American Planning Association, Urban Studies, Geographical Analysis, and Applied Network Science. He also developed and maintains the OSMnx street network modeling software—which has become a standard tool in industry and academia—and he has consulted for many planning, policymaking, and public health organizations.
