Registration and D-Clearance

Limited Status Enrollment

Limited status enrollment allows persons not admitted to USC to take a limited number of courses at the university.

Process for Registering as Limited Status

Students should comply with the following guidelines to register as a limited student:

  • Complete the USC Price Limited Status Application (PDF) and attach copies of official or unofficial transcripts from their degree-granting institutions. These applications are available in RGL 108.
  • Students approved for limited status enrollment should obtain the “Limited Status Permit to Register Form” from the Registration Building at 601 Exposition Blvd.
  • Obtain the USC Price stamp on the “Limited Student Permit to Register Form” and return the stamped form to the Registration Building.

Graduate Students

Students who have not completed a bachelor’s degree are not eligible for limited status enrollment if they have been denied admission to USC or if they have been academically disqualified or suspended from any community college, college, or university.

Prior approval from the department offering the course is required for all limited status enrollments. If a limited status student is subsequently admitted to regular standing, no more than the first 12 units taken through limited status can be applied toward a degree. Individual exceptions must be approved by the dean of the degree-conferring unit. A post-baccalaureate limited status student may not register for more than 12 units.

USC Price Limited Student Policies and Approval Process

Please note there is a $100 non-refundable processing fee charged by the university.

To register as limited status in the Price School of Public Policy, students must complete the USC Price Limited Status Application (PDF) and include copies of official or unofficial transcripts from their bachelor’s-granting institution. The following specifies criteria for students who wish enroll under the limited status designation:

Master of Health Administration (MHA)

  • “B” average (3.0) in undergraduate work
  • Limited to eight units under limited status enrollment.

Master of Urban Planning (MUP)

  • No departmental restrictions on limited status
  • Limited to 12 units under limited status enrollment.

Master of Public Administration (MPA)

  • “B” average (3.0) in undergraduate work
  • Limited to eight units under limited status enrollment.

Master of Public Policy (MPP)

  • “B” average (3.0) in undergraduate work and approval from the Vice Chair of the Public Policy Department
  • Limited to 12 units under limited status enrollment.

Note that in some instances USC Price restrictions on the number of units a student may take under limited status are more rigid than the university policy.

International Students

Limited status enrollment does not fulfill requirements for issuing a student visa. International students must have the approval of the Office of International Admissions (JHH 218A) before registering for classes.

For additional information, refer to the Registration page in the USC Catalogue (Limited Status Enrollment — International Students).

Undergraduate Students

Students who have not completed a bachelor’s degree are not eligible for limited status enrollment if they have been denied admission to USC or if they have been academically disqualified or suspended from any community college, college or university. In addition, a pre-baccalaureate may not register for more than 16 units.
